Do the Holidays give you the Blues??

"As we struggle with shopping lists and invitations, compounded by December's bad weather, it is good to be reminded that there are people in our lives who are worth this aggravation, and people to whom we are worth the same." -- Donald E. Westlake

In the end it always seems worth it right?

Herman Cain or CAN'T be your next President?

Lets talk politics.**  We have not done that in a while here.  I want to know your opinions regarding Presidential nominee hopeful, Herman Cain.  As much as I would like to avoid scandalous rumors and allegations against Political hopefuls, I can not seem to shake the story which is "Herman Cain".  Not only is he one of my "Morehouse Brothers", he is also a native of my birth town Memphis, TN.

Republican Presidential nominee, Herman Cain, has found himself in a world wind of sexual accusations by at least four women.  Cain, at one point, was a front runner for the Republican party.  However, just this week a woman has come forward with allegations that she and Cain carried on a 13year extra marital affair (view video here). Several other women have accused him of sexual misconducting, even alleging that they received settlements in the past to make the allegations go away.

Cain has aggressively DENIED all the allegations against him.  During the last Republican nominee debate, I tuned in expecting mud to be thrown at Cain, regarding the allegations.  Nothing of the sort came up.  Can he survive these allegations and get back on top?  This week there has been talks that Cain is considering dropping out of the race.  But there were also rumored talks that he would drop out, the same week as the last debate.  So far, Cain has been holding ground and maintaining his 9-9-9 economic plan to change the U.S.

What do you think?  Should Cain's "troubled past" play a role in his Presidential campaign?  In an earlier Republican nominee debate, the issue of a Presidential nominee's religion was addressed.  Mitt Romney is of the Mormon religion, and it seems to be a majority consensus that Religion should not be a deciding factor in choosing a Presidential Nominee.  Is there a distinguishable difference between one's religion and one's past, that would make you choose one candidate over the other?  Do you think Herman Cain should drop out of the race?

** This post assumes readers have been following the Republican party Presidential nominee race/debate, and does not present any statements as fact.  Statements are based on inferences from several resources including news reports, television, and internet.  You are encouraged to research and follow the candidates for your own understanding of their character and political tactics. ***

PINK pics : Thanks for your Support!!

 TalkStillCheap.com says Thank YOU!!

I would like to personally thank everyone who made a contribution during the month of October for my Breast Cancer Awareness initiative.  I am very pleased with the amount of participation.  I got my shipment of AWARENESS wrist bands on October 11th, and in just 3 weeks supporters of TalkStillCheap.com donated right at $400.  Everyone who made a donation received a wrist band for every $5 donated.  Participants ranged from family, friends, church members, readers, and friends and family of those who wore their bands from day to day.  The above photo is just a glimpse of some of the donors.  For just 3 weeks, I think the amount was pretty good.  However, the search for a cure does not end in October.  You can continue to donate and receive a free wrist band at any time.  Visit this site and click the donate button and yours will be on its way.

On behalf of all my supporters and participants, I decided to make a donation to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.  I decided to also use this opportunity to introduce a foundation that most may not be familiar with.  Susan G. Komen does a great job bringing awareness, via "race for the cure", to communities throughout the United States.  However, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is one of the top rated non-profit national organizations for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research.

About 90% of donations received by the foundation goes towards research grants and awareness programs.  Not only does the foundation conduct continued research to find a cure, it also provides services to prevent Breast Cancer.  The foundation was founded by a breast cancer survivor.  The site also offers services to help you set up your own fundraising efforts.  You can visit their site for more information, as well as make your own donation for the cause.

Again, I would like to say thank you.  "Many hands make a heavy burden light."  I hope you feel just as great as I do about the great strives we made during the month of October.  Big Shoutout to my GUYS.  I had more men to donate than women.  Several of my male donors made donations big enough to receive several wristbands that they in turned gave away to others.  Not to start a war, but the men really stepped up, and as you can see in the above pic, they were not afraid to wear PINK.  Ladies, don't they all look great?  Please share any stories you have about the bands in a comment on this post.  Also, feel free to share any ideas you may have for making an impact this holiday season.  I am thinking of something ... I will definitely let you know what.  Stay POSTED!!

How to Love

I absolutely applaud Lil Wayne and the producer of this his new video for the single "How to Love".  I am very glad that he decided to use his very large platform to share an important message that we all should spend some time thinking about.

Plenty of blogsites are probably sharing this video.  But for me, it touched a lot of different emotions.  It hit very close to home.  I love the thought and practice of giving Love and being Loved in return.  I love it so much that it truly hurts my heart when those who are closest to me find themselves in a situation where they can't feel the same.

This particular video is a representation of a viscous cycle that women (and I am sure men too) find themselves in on their search for love.  It is unfortunate the pain, fear, and abuse that some women endure in hopes of being truly loved and accepted.  Why do we go through so much torment for Love, when Love is not suppose to hurt?  Psychology commonly proves that humans are a product of their environment.  For instance, those who are sexual abused are more likely to become sexual predators, than those who were not (common Law & Order SVU scenario).

So is the answer, that those that mistake love for hurt, betrayal, and abuse, have only seen "love" this way?  Of course, in life we have to find our own way.  No one is perfect and you have to kiss a few frogs before you find your prince.  But why kiss a frog and keep it when it doesn't turn into your prince, and it is obvious a frog does not know how to love you back?  Do we want our children or those who look up to us, to think loving a frog is good enough?

If you've found a perfect and honest love, do you share it?  Do you give it back to those who need it, those who are on the search for it?  Do you do for your neighbor, your colleague, or your friend without expecting anything in return.  Are you living day to day, trying to be a constant reminder that love conquers all, by loving someone else the right way?  Don't just hold it, share it, give it, show someone else how to love!

Pseudo Love

I wonder, what's stronger, true love or the pseudo (fake/counterfeit) love that we have created from what we imagine true love should be.

That creation of love that is typically mistaken with "strong lust" for another human being.  A lust so strong that leads us to believe that if we care enough for someone, outside of our family and friends, that it must be love.  It must be love, because you want to be around this person all day, everyday and will do anything to make it happen.  It must be love, because as we have witnessed on television and movie screens, time & effort eventually turn into love.  At some point in time it has to right?

Regardless of the countless arguments, disappointments, lies, break-ups, and even physical altercations, if we keep at this lust, one day it will become Love.

So I wonder, what is stronger?  A love that is patient, kind, proud, not rude, and not boastful .... or a love that was created from a lustful desire that is so strong that our hearts won't let us give up on it and our mind won't let us believe its not the real deal?  A pseudo love so strong, that you know its wrong, but you have faith that is just as strong in a hope that one day true love will reveal itself to you and everything will be ok...

Just a thought...

What do you think? Please share your thoughts with me ... comment

To Plank or NOT to Plank????

That is the question....
A Local news Station observes the "planking" craze.

One reason to have a twitter page: some things just do not become national news until they have reached the twitter platform.  "Planking" is a current craze, although not as new as some may think, that finds people stretched out, laying flat on their stomachs, with their hands by their sides and their nose in the ground, and in the most random of places.

This sensation is not new.  It is said to have started circa 2003, when a couple that frequently traveled got tired of taking boring pictures of all the landmarks during their trip.  They decided to lay face down in some of their photos to liven it up.  The idea supposedly caught on by some Australian kids who took the craze to a new level and posted their pics on social sites.  However,  the death of a 20 year old man, who was planking on the 7th floor balcony of an apartment at 4am in May 2011, brought more attention to the craze.*

Just this week, after the hosts of B.E.T.'s 106&Park posted pictures of the two planking before their show aired, planking then hit twitter!!!  There you could find photos of celebrities (NBA players, reality stars, etc.) and every day people planking in the craziest styles and places.  As some pictures got out of hand (just as everything always seems to be taken to the extreme by someone or another), you could sense the dismay of those on twitter who did not approve.

If you ask them why (besides the trauma of nude and explicit planking photos), they will tell you that "planking" is a term that was used during the years of slavery, when slaves were put on a ship, stacked on top of one another, and forced to be shackled face down on wood planks of the ship.  They will tell you that it is racist and shows your lack of ignorance towards history.  They will then urge you NOT to participate.

What do you think?  Are you going to plank anyway?  Do you think the two forms of planking are related?  Does your participation discredit you as a compassionate for African-American history?  Do you think the fad is harmless, despite the reported death of a participant?  Place your comments here!! I'm on the fence about it myself.

*The inferences on the history of planking are an opinion that was formed by myself after reading several different articles via Internet.  It is not to be taken as the ultimate truth, and I encourage you to research for yourself and formulate your own opinion on its origin. Here is one article I read CLICK HERE!

What's Love Got to Do with It?

I have never really made a post on love and relationships.  I by no means am a relationship expert.  However, I am a young woman, and I experience "love" just like I experience everything else I blog about.

Remember the day you decided that certain situations were no longer worth entertaining?  Remember the people who showed you who they truly were over, and over, and over, and over again, and then you finally decided to listen & let them go?  You know, the day you finally determined your self worth & decided to accept nothing less?

Who knows why it takes us so long to realize these things.  Self-worth and dignity, seem like one of the most important characteristics to have in tune with our being.  But, why when it comes to love we are willing to settle, or even put up with the complete opposite of our standards?  Is it a fear of being alone?  If we have already determined our self-worth, why do we seek a love of someone who is unworthy?  Why do we discard that matters of the heart for those who have proven that they won't even take care of it?  I came across this video of a poem entitled "I'll Wait for You." (Shout out to my Soror!!)  I have been replaying it a lot lately.  Please females and males, listen & listen good.  I could NOT have said her words better myself.

( I wanted to post this video the first day I saw it, but I didn't really want to post someone else's work.  But hey, it is spreading a powerful message and adding to this video's views.  I am trying to find her to express my gratitude.)  What do you guys think?  What does love have to do with love?  Relationships, are we together for the sake of being together or are we really following our hearts?

Update:  If you love this inspirational piece and the author as much as I do, I found her facebook page Poet Janette, show her some love.  Clicking her name on this post, will take you there :)

To Get you Inspired: Thanks, Oprah

I've finally got the chance to catch up some reading
material that was sitting around. O Magazine & "Super Rich"
So, Oprah said farewell to her television show of 25 years, on May 25, 2011.  I'm never at home to watch the show.  But ,on this particular day I was.  She decided to do a simple show, with just her and her audience.  No guests, just Oprah.  She really wanted to thank all of her supporters, listeners, guests, fans, staff, etc.  I knew she would have a good show in place.  Of course she did not disappoint.

I jotted down some of the things she said.  (My apologies, it took so long to plant them here.)  Below are some of my favorite quotes from her last show.  She "Preached" that day & it was very inspirational and motivational.

"You are responsible for your own life."

"When you know better, you do better."

"Take responsibility for the energy you bring to me & into this space."

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.  You are responsible for your own life, and when you get that, everything changes.  You get, FREE."

"We often block our own blessings because we don't feel good enough or pretty enough."

"You are worthy because you were born, because you are HERE."

"My team and Jesus, Alpha & Omega, the Source of the Force, the one and only God."

"I know I've never been alone and you haven't either.  That Grace, the voice bigger than myself speaks to me.  It is guidance that is greater than my meager mind."

"God is Love, God is Life, and your life is always speaking to you."

To sum it all up, the message I took away from her final show was that Oprah believed in a higher power.  She became in tune with the purpose she believed that higher power had in place on her life. She allowed that faith to guide her footsteps.
What is magical about Oprah, to me, is that she Loved her career.  She knew without a doubt that she was where she was suppose to be.  I think it is that attitude that allowed her to become fearless in pursuit of achievement, and that security in her faith that produced her ultimate success.
Not only is she successful in her career, but successful as a person with a heart that seeks to put others in the same position of faith and fearlessness.

Thank you, Oprah.

What did you think of Oprah's farewell show?  Inspired?  Not an Oprah fan?  Share your comments here!

Die OFF

I thank God for lessons learned and the amazing way he reveals things so that you learn something NEW everyday.  I am a pretty caring and nurturing person.  I used to have a dog, Leo, that I had to eventually giveaway.  I wanted another one, but at this point in my life, it would still be unfair to have one, as much as I like to stay busy.  So instead, I bought some seeds.

I have become quite the set of "green thumbs".  I've made some mistakes with a few seeds, but right now my Sunflowers are standing tall and strong.  Lately I have noticed that the bottom leaves have been turning brown ... dying!  I thought something was wrong, too much water, too much attention.  I would simply pick off the dead leaves (if you look closely in the pic you will see that there is one dead leave at the bottom of the largest plant), but they would grow back & turn again.

So, I finally decided to research sunflowers to see what I could possibly be doing wrong.  I found out that I was actually doing things right.  It is perfectly normal for the bottom leaves of sunflower plants to wither off and die.  It means that the plant is attempting to begin the reproduction process.  The plant is focusing on developing its head (the big bright yellow leaves and brown center that create the beauty of sunflowers) and the upper leaves.  If you didn't know, sunflowers grow really big and tall.  I will eventually have to move this plant to a larger pot and probably eventually to the ground.

Upon taking care of my plant, I had a revelation.  I made a connection to my plant and the natural course of life.  If this plant is smart enough to stop supplying nutrients and energy to the small "irrelevant" leaves at its bottom that are no longer needed for successful growth and reproduction, why can't I do the same thing?

There is no reason I can't.  Because I can.  Being nuturing and too caring can sometimes be a bad thing, like watering a plant too much.  Sometimes it is good to take a step back and let nature take its course.  Stop giving too much time and energy to someone/some thing that should be able to take care of itself.  Let go of those things that are no longer needed, especially if they are not contributing to your own proper growth and development.  Don't let your worry for the dying and irrelevant make you so paranoid you over water your plant, destroying yourself along with something that was meant to only be there for a season anyway.

Focus on the big picture, yourself, and let the leaves at the bottom, that are no longer providing you any benefit, DIE OFF!

Beyonce "Copy Cat"

Watch this side by side comparison of Beyonce's recent performance of "Girls, Run the World" and a 2010 peformance by Lorella Cuccarini below.

Notice the similarities?  The multiple persons background, the flock of the birds, the bouncing shapes .....  Co-winky dink right?  Well at first glance I would probably say so, but this is not the first time Beyonce has been accused of stealing someone's video/performance concept.  The only time I can recall Beyonce giving credit to a "copied" concept, is when she gave the discussed the thought behind her "Single Ladies" video.

I didn't watch the awards on Sunday but I saw a lot of tweets about how great of a job Beyonce did.  She is an excelent performer, I wouldnt take that away from her.  But I'm wondering, why not give credit where credit is due?  Like, have you ever seen your Facebook status copied and pasted to someone else's page, without so much as a shoutout or a thanks?  (happens every so often to me, and I don't approve)  Where do you draw the line?
Imitation is the biggest form of flattery right?? What do you think?

With that said, shoutout to Concreteloop.com for posting this video.

Check out where the concept from "Single Ladies" came from .... funny stuff!

SuperWoman

Good News!! No one has to take over TalkstillCheap.com for me. (although I am thinking of adding someone to the team, to get more things done, contact me if interested)  Anyway, I'm still alive!!! If you read my previous blog post, you know why I'm saying this.  Recently, I participated in one of life's most thrilling adventures.  I was "literally in the clouds", as my friend so nicely put it.  Click the video below to get an idea of what I did! :)

video

Yes, skydiving.  There is NO TURNING BACK!! I JUMPED!

video
Wow!! I still can't believe I did that. The initial jump plays over and over in my head. The mental replay is an instant reminder that I can GO ANYWHERE AND DO ANYTHING, if I make up my mind to JUST DO IT!
I always said that I would go skydiving ... one day.  My Senior Year of High School, I had the luxury of para-sailing on the beautiful island of Mauritius, Africa.  I felt a new thrill was wellll over due.  Plus, I kinda wanted to shake off the mental restraint of my first year of Law School & "Live a little".  The opportunity presented itself at the perfect time (my Line Sister's birthday, *hearts*) & then the v-neck SuperWoman shirt landed in my lap, I knew it was destiny!!

The next day my Boss asked me "What possessed you?" (lol, in all fun) But, in all seriousness, I embraced the Superman logo years ago & I did one of my first ever blog posts (on myspace, view my talkstillcheap.com archives) about why I connected with it.  I actually derived it from one of my favorite scriptures, Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."

I have been so fortunate to live an amazing life and experience some of the most amazing people, places, and things.  I don't want to start preaching, but I owe it all to knowing where my strength lies and knowing who holds my future.  What God has for me, it is for me.  No man, woman, devil, or doubter can take that away.  And, if its my time to go, then its my time to go!  However, God proves to me over and over that he has an extrordinary plan for my life.  I embrace my life lessons and try to see the bright side of things.  No need to stress, because I believe in a higher power.

I thank him for keeping me & I'm excited about the rest of this journey.  The amazing coast down, once the parachute was released, was absolutely BEAUTIFUL.  If God can see fit to make and nuture so many beautiful things & continue to bless me like he has, I want to stay in his good graces.
Everyday, just a little closer ..... and BOY DID I GET CLOSE THIS DAY, HUH?
;)

Videotapping the experience was a great decision.  Looking at the pics, it looks like I have a huge belly hanging over my belt.  Its really wind blowing under my shirt... but I never wanna look like that.  Ugh, I have been such a home body with school and work.  I'm getting back in the gym tho.  Just Do IT!!

Before I JUMP

What I have been up to & What's on my MIND!

So, it has been a minute since I've been able to sit down and blog.  It is such ashame, because some very historic things have happened in the last couple of weeks.  However, the most historic happening of them all (in my life), is me completing my first year of law school. woooooo hoooooooo! OMG, when they say the first year is stressful nerve wrecking, they are not kidding.  Learning the law has several ins & outs & exceptions & buts .... one question can have several different answers.  However, I am enjoying every minute of it.  I would like to give a shout out to everyone who has already asked me for legal advice!

I'm not a lawyer yet you guys, but I am well on my way!  1 year down & 2 years to go!

Memphis Grizzlies exceed all expectations in the NBA playoffs
Next, my Memphis Grizzlies have already made history, by being the FIRST 8th seed to knock out a #1 seed and then go on to win the first game of the 2nd round of the NBA playoffs.
I am a home team kinda girl.  It just makes sense to me to be loyal to the home team.  I  LOVE THE STORY OF THE UNDERDOG, and this year the Memphis Grizzlies are just that!   Shoutout to the Grizzlies, if you don't win another game this series, you have done your city and your true fans proud!  For more intense fan coverage, follow me on twitter @Relleisallthat    #GoGrizz

Picture of downtown Memphis, flooded due to recent extreme
weather in the mid-south
Recent weather, tornadoes and floods, have pounded the mid-south (Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, etc.)  Several families have been misplaced.  Not only does this hit close to home, because my loved ones and friends have been affected in Memphis, but also because some fellow Law Students have been severely impacted.  A couple of students in Alabama even lost their lives, during a tornado.
For this reason, (and because service is my duty) I will be establishing opportunities for people to make donations, specifically clothes, to those impacted by the floods and tornadoes.
Stay tuned for details
Fox News .... this station is always under scrutiny, makes
a HUGE mistake in the broadcast on news of Osama Bin Laden's death
On May 1, 2011, the country awaited as President Obama made the announcement that Osama Bin Laden had been killed.  Crowds gathered outside the Whitehouse and social networks were BUZZING!! Of course, everyone had their own theories.  It seemed this announcement was too much of a coincidence, especially being on the brink of a "hissy fit" for President Obama's birth certificate.  It did not help any, that just a day after the President's announcement, pictures were released of the President and his cabinet in the "situation room" watching as the order on Osama was carried out.  The picture was taken the same day the announcement was made, as opposed to a week prior, as the President had suggested in his speech.  Pictures of the body still have not been released, and the American people want proof!! In this day in age, would a picture really solid proof??
Ok, Its 2:45am and in about 8.5hours I will be making up for all the fun I've missed this semester :)
Stay tuned for my next blog post to find out how ....
(If I don't make it back, someone, with a sense of humour and common decency, continue the TalkstillCheap.com Domain)
I kinda got a jump on the summer fun
I AM NOW A RED HEAD!!!

National Day of Silence : April 15th

April 15, 2011 is the National Day of Silence

The National Day of Silence, is a silent protest against bullying, especially bullying in schools targeting the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender) community.  It is recognition of how those who are targets of bullying become silent and withdrawn.  This feeling of being alone in the world has recently converted to a surge of teen suicides over the entire country.

The National Day of Silence began in 1996, on a college campus, with a group of about 150 students.  The day is sponsored by GLSEN (The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network).  The idea is to bring attention to the affects of bullying and harassment.  Studies have found that 3 out of 5 students feel unsafe at school, due to their sexual orientation.
Students are encouraged to pledge a day of complete silence, in recognition of those who suffer in silence.  6,000+ schools have registered to participate in the day.  Obviously, it may be irrational for some people to be completely silent the entire day.

Here are a few other ways you can participate:
Silence during your lunch break
Posting informative links (like this page) to your Facebook
Add #NationalDayofSilence to the end of all your tweets
Wear Red
Post fliers on your campus
Hand out note cards on campus to inform others
Wear Red

Know someone who is a victim of bullying?  Noticed a change in behavior of one of your friends, classmates, or associates?  Have they become more withdrawn?  Know someone who is a bully?
Let them know the bullying stops NOW, the effects could be devastating.  Show your support, April 15, 2011.

Japan vs. Haiti : RELIEF

I heard an interesting question on the radio the other day. "Why aren't we exhausting relief efforts for Japan, like we did for Haiti?"  On its face, the question suggest American disdain for the the people of Japan.  However, I think the reason is quite more complex than that.

Lady GaGa's "We Pray for Japan"
bracelet, $5.  All proceeds go to Japan.

Obviously, the economic wealth of Japan surpasses the poverty of Haiti.  Japan sent $17 million to the U.S. after the Septemeber 11th attacks and $12 million after Hurricane Katrina.  They were even able to evacuate at least 300,000 people prior to the March 11th tsunami, which can be contributed to the technological advances that were able to detect the threat of disaster and due to having an emergency system in place.  Unfortunately, as we witnessed, Haiti lacked the man power and the economics to afford such "luxuries".

However, should the fact that Japan is considered "self-sufficient" deter our efforts to assist in relief?  The tsunami has left over 2,475 people dead, over 3,118 missing, and over 1,889 injured.  Japan will definitely need money to rebuild.  Aid is currently needed to provide shelter, food, water, medical supplies, and psychological counseling for a country that has a population of over 127,560,000 people.

When the earthquake hit Haiti, it was a beautiful thing to witness all the relief efforts (telethons, concerts, text donations, etc.) made to assist the people.  Apparently, as a "poverish" country, Haiti would need more assistance than Japan, but I don't think we should ignore them.  Give $10 as opposed to $20, or $.50 as opposed to $1.  Do something!   Even #winning Charlie Sheen has pledged to donate $1 of every ticket to his already sold out shows in Detroit and Chicago to Red Cross Japan Relief.  Below are ways you can help!

Your Last "Tweet" : What will it reveal about You?

Left: Shanterrica Madden is accused with stabbing to death (Right) Tina Stewart
This past weekend, Memorial services were held for slain Middle Tennesee State University, basketball star, Tina Stewart.  Also this weekend, her accused killer, Shanterrica Madden was released on a $100,000 bond.  Tons of rumours swarmed social sites about what happened the night of the incident.  An incident of this magnitude, in this town, on this campus, has surely shocked the nation and left many unanswered questions.  As Madden made her first court appearance some details have been confirmed.

What would cause a freshman student to stab another student athlete to the point of death?  Was there a heated argument?  Have they had problems before?  Was it an accident?  Was it self defense?

Even if your page is private, people with
public pages may Retweet what
you say!

Well, details have revealed that Madden's attorney is claiming self defense in the murder of Stewart.  This entire claim may rely heavily on the use of the social site, Twitter.  During the court hearing, Stewart's attorney, Joe Brandon Jr., requested that information found on twitter be "Preserved".  This means that the defense attorney, Brandon Jr., wants to make sure that posts made on twitter by the parties, or any other evidence for that matter, which could easily be subject to "corruption, destruction, or contamination" be obtained and preserved in its original condition to be used as evidence during the trial.

Apparently, friends have confirmed Stewart's twitter page which contained a tweet stating "I just called the police on my roommate.  I feel like a snitch, but I cant stand that B@#%!".  Responses to that tweet, such as "Don't Hurt her", have also been noted.  If you review Madden's twitter page, most of her last tweets were centered around school work.

This incident is very unfortunate.  Definitely, more details will be revealed during the trial.  I hate the families and friends on both ends have to re- live the entire ordeal.  We don't know what happened on that night, but how much of an influence do you think Stewart's last tweets should have in the trial?  Unfortunately, the entire trial may center around it.  Check out a past post where a a young man was acquitted of the murder of a rapper, based on past incidents between the parties and a self defense claim HERE

Just be careful what you tweet.  You never know what your last tweet will be.  R.I.P. Tina Stewart

UPDATE: MARCH 30, 2011 CLEARING UP SOME RUMOURS
With high profile cases like these, rumours swirl out of control before the story even hits the news.  I recall all the rumours that surrounded the murder trial of Rapper, Dollar, (view here) and how so many people were upset with the outcome of the case (not guilty).  They did not understand how someone could be found innocent for such a crime, when in reality most of the details they heard about the murder were untrue (or proven otherwise in court).  With that said, lets clear up some details that have been revealed in the Madden case, regarding the night of the incident.
On Thursday March 24, 2010, a preliminary hearing was held for accused murderer, Shanterrica Madden.  A Judge decided to bound the case over to a grand jury, who will then decide on May 16, if there is enough evidence to charge Madden with first degree murder.  Evidence submitted during the hearing clarified that:
1. Stewart was stabbed ONE time (not multiple stab wounds)
2. Wounds to the back of Stewart's head, left shoulder, and left elbow
suggest there may have been multiple ATTEMPTS to stab more than once
3. Fatal stab wound was below collarbone in the center of the chest
4. Madden's statement suggest that she held knife to her chest as Stewart came towards her
5. Defense suggest fatal stab wound is inconsistent with Madden's story

STAY TUNED FOR MORE UPDATES & FEEL FREE TO POST ANY TRIAL INFORMATION IN A COMMENT!

Update #2 April 11, 2011 - Parents of Tina Stewart sue accused murderer Shanterrica Madden for $20million.
The suit is a civil case, for "wrongful death".  You may recall in the O.J. Simpson case, he was not convicted of murder in his criminal case, but he was found liable in a civil case filed by the parents of the victims.   The same scenario is playing out in this case.  Stewart's family is aware they may never see $20 million from Madden, however they are filing the civil suit in hopes that Madden will not profit by selling her story to any media outlets.
The burden of proof is lower in a civil case vs. a criminal case.  In a criminal case the defendant should be found guilty "beyond a reasonable doubt", meaning without a doubt in your mind, the defendant is guilty.  In a civil case the plaintiff has the burden of proving "a preponderance of the evidence", meaning "more likely than not", the defendant is guilty based on the evidence presented.

Update #3 May 14, 2012 - Shanterrica Madden was convicted of 2nd degree murder
Although, the Prosecution tried to convict on 1st degree murder.  Shanterrica was found guilty of 2nd degree murder.  The difference between 1st degree and 2nd degree murder is intent.  In order to be convicted for 1st degree murder, the prosecution had to prove that Shanterrica premeditated (planned, prepared, setup) the murder of Tina Stewart.  The prosecution was unsuccessful in determined that the murder was premeditated.  However, they were successful in proving that the intent at the time the incident occurred, was to murder.  She faces 15 to 25 years in prison, plus 3 to 6 years for throwing the murder weapon in the dumpster.  Sentencing will be held on July 16th.

Update #4 July 17, 2012 Shanterrica Madden was sentenced to 29 years in prison for the 2nd degree murder of MTSU basketball player, Tina Stewart.  This sentence includes the maximum 25 year sentence for 2nd degree murder, and an additional four years for tampering with evidence.  Madden will be eligible for parole when she turns 46 years old.  She is currently 20 years old.  Although Madden is a first time offender, the judge did not believe Madden was sincerely sorry for her crime.  She apologized during her trial and via a letter during her sentencing.  Two young lives ... GONE.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY 2011

Today, is the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day.  International Women's Day is recognized as a time to celebrate the global inequalities women have overcome and to work on removing inequalities that still remain.  The first International Women's Day was held in Germany, Austria, Denmark and Switzerland, during the year 1911.  What began as campaigns, rallies, and protest for Women's rights has transitioned, some what, into a celebration of equalities achieved for women, economically and socially. Although it is true we have made great strides, all over the world Women are still treated less than Man.

Some Interesting Facts about the Plight of Women*
Women perform 66% of the world's work, but....
Women represent 70% of the world's poor
6 out of every 10 women experience sexual/physical abuse
Women were not allowed to vote until the year 1920, in the U.S.
1964, The Civil Rights Act was passed, which also help to prevent discrimination of women in the workplace
In times of War, Women are brutally punished
N.O.W., National Organization for Women founded 1966
1987 Congress established Women's History Month

Each year an International Women of Courage Awards ceremony is held.  This year it will be hosted by none other than Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Your favorite social sites are Celebrating International Women's Day, which means YOU can get involved with just a click of a button.  Via Facebook you can sign CARE International Women's Day Petition. The petition will be sent to Congress to encourage our representatives to "support policies that help empower women".  Sign the Petition HERE.  Via twitter you can place bids to have your favorite celebrity (Brett Michales, Brian White, George Lopez, Ashley Tisdale, etc) follow, tweet, or retweet you.  All proceeds from the bids will go to CARE, to help educate Women.  Visit TwitChange HERE

TalkstillCheap.com @ the S.E.A. awards 2011

TalkstillCheap.com Nominee "Website of the Year", Creator, Shirrelle M. "Role Model of the Year"

On yesterday, March 6, 2011, I attended my first award show, as a blog site. As previously posted, TalkstillCheap.com made the S.E.A. ballot back in September 2010. (Previous story here.). The nominations and votes are placed by the public at large. TalkstillCheap.com was nominated for "Website of the Year" and I, Shirrelle, was nominated for "Role Model of the Year". S.E.A. stands for Southern Entertainment Awards. This year marked the eighth year the awards have been held. The S.E.A.s are geared toward the recognition of indie artists, producers, models, radio personalities, etc.

So as a first time nominee and a first time attendee, I wasn't sure what to expect. I was certain it would be a great networking opportunity, if nothing else. The show was filled with performances and guest presenters. A lot of the winners were announced on Saturday and the remaining were announced during the award ceremony. Although, TalkstillCheap.com did not bring home any awards, it was truly an experience.
However, I was a little disappointed. There were some good performances and one GREAT one, in my opinion. (The women did a superb job) A lot of the winners were not present to pick up their awards. It made me wonder, "Do people take the S.E.A. awards seriously?". There was a nice crowd there, but the crowd did not seem to consist of the "winners". Some of the performances were lack luster. The hostess for the evening even told a group they need to "work on your stage presence". She was telling the truth. Most of the rappers I could not understand.

The S.E.A. awards were created, in my belief, to give the independent artists/entrepreneurs in the entertainment industry, some recognition. The world is full of talent, but unfortunately not everyone makes it to the Grammys. Honestly, If you can't give 110% for the S.E.A. awards, I would even hate to see you at the Grammys. Then again, that goes back to my original question. Are the S.E.A.s taken seriously?

I don't know, maybe it was just me, as a first time attendee. Maybe I set my expectations too high. Its my belief, that you should always put your best foot forward no matter where you are, who your crowd is, and how big or small your crowd is.  I am sure some performers could have done a whole better.

On the other hand, there was one group that even returned to the stage for an encore. A very talented group, by the name of "One Thurd" (bottom right picture), they gave a lot of energy, which in turn brought the energy up in the building. The crowd finally got on their feet. A couple of the women performers did a great job too. The set Dj Dimepiece did with another female artist, was also pretty good.

All in all, it was an honor to be nominated and to attend.  The staff was very efficient and timely in responding to emails and questions via twitter.  I got a chance to network and I applaud all the nominees, artist, and businesses.  I know there are a lot of people out there doing their thing and chasing their dreams.  (Shoutout to my homegirl, Da Ladie, host of Memphis Street Scenes television show, performer, and an Internet radio show personality #BOSS)

Do you think I sound harsh?  Did you attend the award ceremony?  Do you take S.E.A. nominations and awards seriously?  Does Memphis, the hosting city, take the award show and music conference weekend seriously?  What can we do to improve?  Any one out there aspire to make the ballot next year?
I NEED COMMENTS on this POST!!!

I DEFINITELY WANT TO THANK EVERYONE WHO TOOK THE TIME OUT TO VOTE AND CONFIRM THEIR SUBMISSIONS.  THANKS FOR PUTTING ME ON THE BALLOT!!

A Revealing New Black History: Ernest Withers

You may or may not be familiar with the name Ernest Withers.  However, one thing is for sure.  You know him. You may have never seen his face, but you have seen his EYES.  Ernest Withers, was a Memphis native, and a freelance photographer during the Civil Rights Movement.  He is solely credited for capturing the imagery of one of the most historical movements in history.  His images helped to send out the faces of the Civil Rights Movement to the entire world.  Here are a couple of his works below.  Im sure one, or a few are familiar to you!

View a slideshow of his pictures here on the Commerical Appeal website.  If you recognize any of these pictures, you have seen the eyes of Mr. Ernest Withers.  It was his photographic eye that captured these moments as he traveled with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other Civil Rights Activist.  He was there at some of the most intimate times of the movement.  However, it was just recently revealed that Mr. Withers may have been an FBI informant, meaning he gave private insight about the dealings of the Civil Rights movement.  Ironically, the Commerical Appeal, a Memphis Newspaper, was first to break this story.  Read it here.  It is believed that Withers provided the location of Dr. King that ultimately led to his murder.  Furthermore, possibly provided information about King's funeral arrangments to the FBI.
Everyone has seen this photo, taken by none other than Mr. Withers.

CNN has picked up the story and will be airing a special on Sunday February 20, 2010, entitled "Pictures Don't Lie".  Does this information, if true, change history as we know it?  As one Civil Rights leader, cleverly pointed out, the purpose of the Non-Violent movement was to let the world know what they were doing and where they were going.  He also stated, Dr. King would probably be happy that Mr. Withers was on the FBI payroll, arguably intergration at its finest.  The family of Mr. Withers finds these allegations to be hardly true.  Who knows?  The paper trail and primarily the intimate photos, do tell a lot.  I encourage you to catch the CNN Special.  You may learn a new Black History!!

Googling OFF Fat : How To!

Winter time is the right time, to work on your figure.  Most major holidays have passed, hopefully you're done pigging out and you want to get toned up in preparation for Spring.  I have the type of metabolism that only gears up with major effort.  In other words, everything I eat will stick to me if I don't work it off.  Sucks :(  So loosing weight is one thing I definitely know how to do.  There is no EFFICIENT quick way to do it.  There may be products that can help you do this quickly, but as soon as you revert back to your eating habits without it, your body will hold on to EVERY SINGLE CALORIE.

I don't really like to use the word diet, but loosing weight is really a life style change.  It takes hard work, discipline, and TIME!  There is no real quick and SAFE way to do it, but there is an EASY and safe way to make some life changes.  The method lies in something you use all day everyday and it is as easy as using GOOGLE!

Here is what you will need:
Cell Phone
Pen
Paper
Scale

To begin, download the Calorie counter app to your cell phone (the one that looks just like the above picture).  Next, on your phone or computer, google "Calorie Calculator", visit a website that provides a free calorie calculator.  This calculator will ask your gender, age, weight, and height.  Based on what you enter it will generate how many calories your body uses each day in order to operate.  Write that number down on your piece of paper.  Now subtract 500 from that number.  The answer is your new best friend, it is the number of calories you are allowed to eat each day.  This my friend is the magic formula for proper weight loss.  One lb is equal to 3500 calories, by consuming less calories per day than your body burns, you allow your body to to dip into "stored fat" to burn off additional calories.  Now the calorie app will be your new best friend, you can type in any food (just like Google) (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, beverages *we often don't think about the calories consumed in beverages*) and the calorie counter will tell you how many calories each food contains in each serving.  This allows you to effectively keep up with the calories you consume each day.  It helps you to plan your meals each day and to say no to that 750 calorie snack after you've already eaten 1600 calories for the day.

Basically this method is more about being aware of what you're doing to your body, by being aware of the things you put in your body.  When we think of diets we think of depriving ourselves of the foods we like.  That is not necessarily what dieting is about, it is about portion control.  Have two slices of pizza instead of an entire half.  DON'T STOP AT THE CALORIE COUNTING, EXERCISE!!! The calorie counter will also tell you how many calories you burn for each activity you do & it will ultimately track your weight loss by comparing the amount of calories you eat to amount of calories you've burned for the day.  How easy is that???

You will feel more empowered as the days go by, as the weight begins to (maybe slowly, but surely) fall off.  Hopefully you will begin to make smarter eating choices as well ( you will note that foods like apples, graham crackers, decaffeinated green tea *some of my favorite low calorie snacks*, are low in calories, and therefore allow you to enjoy them more freely and often) Add in your 8 glasses of water per day & your skin will clear and shimmery during the night, lol!

Its going to take hard work and dedication to stay true.  But once you get over the hump! You'll feel GREAT!! I PROMISE!! & Yes, I am currently on the same workout plan :)

Super Rich : Book Review Part I

Myself and Russell Simmons sharing a laugh
For weeks I have been saying I needed a new book to read, something other than a law school book.  Well, on this past Monday, while driving to school, I was listening to the Steve Harvey Morning show.  I NEVER listen to the Steve Harvey Morning show (I used to, the summer I interned in Washington, D.C., good show).  I only happened to listen to the show this paticular morning, because I was driving a rental car and for some reason I had not changed the station.  However, on this paticular morning, Russell Simmons was a guset, and they were discussing his new book, SUPER RICH.

I found the concept of the book to be intriguing.  Russell discussed the notion of being "Super Rich", as a state of mind where you are truly happy and want for NOTHING!!  He spoke about the power of giving.  He made a statement that "Givers are the best Getters", meaning those who give and give happily attract others who in return want to GIVE to them.  Who doesn't like a cheerful giver??

Now I am a true believer that "the more you give, the more He gives to you".  Russells concept of the book reminded me of a favorite book of mine, which was also a New York Best Seller, by Former President Bill Clinton, entitled "Giving".  In this book Clinton discusses how you can always give back to the world, not only through money, but through your time and your gifts.  His book shared the stories of people, young and old, all over the world that demonstrated their gift of giving through charities, foundations, time, community service, etc.

Barnes & Nobles, Atlanta, GA
Russell Simmons book signing.

Russell's discussed the concept of the book in terms of applying a SUPER RICH mindset in all your relationships, whether it be in love, work, spirituality, friendship, etc.  From what I read so far (during the two hours I waited in the bookstore for an autograph copy), Russell suggest that by working hard on the things you are passionate about and then giving the product of that work away (sharing it with others), you will begin to gain recognition for your craft and the possibilities will therefore become ENDLESS!!

Sounds good right?  I can atest to what he is saying.  TalkstillCheap.com has done some amazing things this past year, just by me sharing with you topics that I am passionate about.  There will be a follow up to this post, once I finish the entire book!

I would love to start a book club, but at this moment I can not be totally committed.  However, I do encourage you to go out and buy the book ($22) and share your reviews here with me!!
